Statistics show that one in every four women in college has been the victim of rape, while it is believed that 90 percent of the victims knew their rapist.

Shockingly, the statistics also show that men are more likely to take it for granted that a woman who drinks alcohol on a date is a more willing sex partner, while 40 percent of men don’t think it’s inappropriate to force sex on a female who is intoxicated.

When students take the step to attend college, often away from their loved ones, they assume that campus administrators will make the place a safe and secure one for them to attend.

According to a December 2000 report entitled The Sexual Victimization of College Women, conducted by the National Institute of Justice at the U.S. Department of Justice, it found that a college with 10,000 students could experience as many as 350 rapes each year.

There are, of course, ways in which you can prevent yourself from becoming a victim of college campus rape. College should be a time of exploring, making new friends and discovering what it is you want to aspire to.

It should not be a time of fear and solitude as you battle through four years knowing you have become a victim of rape.

If you do find yourself the subject of unwanted attention make sure you get the help you need before things escalate to a stage where you may not have as much control as you would want.

And remember, it is never the victim’s fault.
